The annual New Year’s Eve celebration at Laurieton United Services Club has raised more than $6500

– by Robert Dougherty​More than $6500 has been raised for NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteers during a New Year’s Eve celebration in Laurieton. Around six-hundred State Emergency Services (SES), RFS volunteers and their families were treated to dinner at Laurieton United Services Club (LUSC) instead of the annual fireworks display on Tuesday, December 31. The event was featured three bands, childrens rides and was achieved with a community grant from the Rotary Club of Laurieton. The Rotary Club of Laurieton director of community service Alan Anderson said the team had done their duty to support the community. “Everyone coming through on the gate was very supportive of suspending the fireworks and diverting the money to the RFS,” he said. read more +

The ladies group has been hosting bingo events at the club and generously community members have made the donation possible. The money was handed over at the Laurieton RSL Sub Branch’s annual Christmas party on december 14. Laurieton RSL Sub Branch president John (Budgie) Parrott said the donation was much appreciated. “Without the support of groups like the Laurieton United Services Club Women’s Auxiliary we would not be able to support veterans when they return home,” Mr Parrott said.read more +

Laurieton United Services Club acts as evacuation centre for Camden Haven residents

– by Peter Daniels ​Twelve hundred people flocked to the Laurieton United Services Club at the height of Friday night’s emergency warning as bushfires threatened the southern end of the local government area. As a shelter from the threat, there were also some 130 animals including lizards, birds, dogs and cats. Many had bunkered down for the night, expecting to stay for the long haul, said the club’s secretary manager Rob Dwyer. “What unfolded last night (November 8) was a fantastic attribute to this community,” he said. “Under trying conditions they came together for the benefit of everyone. “Our community and staff did a wonderful job last night. “We had residents from Kew, Kendall, Dunbogan, Laurieton and Johns River here. “The camaraderie among everyone was really quite special,” he said.
